“At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the LORD...” Deuteronomy 10:8
In the Bible, when God moved, His presence was carried on the shoulders of the priests (those sanctified and separated to Him for service), not by any contraptions made by man. In these last days we should not expect Him to be any different.
God was not waiting for airplanes, cars, television, radio or internet so that He could reach the four corners of the earth. No! Most of civilization was reached before the ink dried on the New Testament pages, by men who had none of the luxuries we consider necessities.
Their only asset was the Spirit that raised their crucified Lord from the dead. We have so many other “assets” and those assets are costing us dearly. Peter and John were able to say “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I DO have I give you... In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise and walk.”
Television, for example, is a medium so expensive that the message must be wide and shallow enough to appeal to a large number of benefactors in order to perpetuate the broadcast. If you listen to “Christian” TV for a day, you would think that financial prosperity and healthy living were the heart of the Gospel.
What is it that you talk about with your acquaintances when the door is wide open? Paul said, “I was determined to know NOTHING among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” Why aren’t we determined to be limited in such a way? I think it is because we still have some hope for pleasing God in some other way besides faith in what His Son did on that cross. We do not think that we’re so bad that our ONLY hope is in His death and resurrection.
Until we have been brought to Ground Zero – until our high places have been brought low – we may carry SOMETHING to the nations, but it will not be the presence and power of the living God.
